I agree with you about depending entirely on alternative energy. A backup system needs to be in play, I do not know how long it take to fire up a coal plant to create energy, but in the case you mentioned in Europe, they should have had sufficient warning from the weather forecast to crank them up just in case they were needed. We have sufficient warnings about Hurricanes, extreme cold, and hot spells for our utilities to be prepared as much as possible. With a proper power grid I can be done, and the cost should level out so there would not be that much of an increase in the cost of energy to the nation.
